TS GROWTH and RESOURCES
(In place of the usual "Introductory" we by the Board
Asheville is a busy and enterprising city, with 20 churches; Y. M. C. Associations; various book and reading clubs; graded and private schools; Board of Trade; Good Roads Association; four clubs; lodges of leading orders; medical society; bar asso- ciation; law library and public library; hos- pitals and charitable institutions; military companies; military band; four banks; boarding houses; telephone exchange, long distance connections; an Auditorium seat- ing 2,500 persons; opera house; two daily newspapers, numerous weekly, church, school and society publications; best golf links in the South; well equipped sanitari- ums; gravity water supply from mountain streams; fire department; electric light and gas plants; electric street car system; water supply and sewerage systems; twelve miles of paved streets; market; excellent liveries; cotton mill; tannery; ice factories; wood- working establishments; machine shops; dairies; greenhouses; three water power plants; numerous manufacturing enter- prises.
Asheville is an educational center; public and private school property has a value of $600,000. The city school system of Ashe- ville was organized in 1888 with two poor buildings and an enrollment of 900 pupils. In fifteen years the system has grown until it has become one of the most efficient in the South, if not in the country. There is now a teaching force of forty-five instruct- ors including the superintendent and super- visors of manual training, music and physi- cal culture. The enrollment this year is about 2,900 and the city has six modernly built and well equipped school buildings.
Attractive recreation may be had by driv- ing with fine livery, horseback riding and tramping through the mountain trails, golf on the splendid links of the Swannanoa Country Club, drives on the Biltmore estate, boating on the lake at Riverside park, and in social life at the Asheville, Elks and Albe- marle Clubs.
herewith insert the following, furnished of Trade).
Fourteen miles of electric railway cover all points in the city, fare five cents, through transfers.
The rapid growth of Asheville had made necessary additional water supply, and the construction of a pipe line heading in the Black Mountains, at the foot of Mt. Mitch- ell, was completed in the summer of 1903. The purity of this water is assured, there being no habitation in the mountains above the intake.
Water and water powers are abundant as may be inferred from the character of the country. Streams are bold, free and numer- ous, the water is pure, clear and without limit, free from iron and soft, exactly what is needed for bleacheries, dye-works, tan- neries and pulp making, etc. Several tan- neries are in successful operation.
Five miles below Asheville the W. T. Weaver Power Company has developed a plant for electric transmission of power from the French Broad River. This com- pany has installed machinery that develops 3,000 horse power, continuously, day and night; as the low normal flow of the river is ample for this amount of power they are not required to store or pond the water.
The Board of Trade invites every investi- gation from parties seeking sites for facto- ries and other manufacturing enterprises.
Opportunities excellent for small fruit growing:, poultry raising, canning, trucking, sti 'ck-raising, woi tdwi irking.
Timber lands can be bought at from $2.50 to $15.00 per acre. Agricultural lands at from $8 to $100 per acre, according to qual- ity, proximity to railroads, towns, etc. These are prices of land either in a high state of cultivation already or capable of being made so. Poor lands are much cheaper.
Excursions can always lie had to Ashe- ville, and those interested in anything per- taining to this city or section should either come and see for themselves, or address for detailed information, the Secretary of the Board of Trade.
