Introduction
HE International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers was formed in 1897 under the Presidency of the late James McNeill Whistler, and the first Exhibition was opened at Knightsbridge in 1898. Since then the Society has held four Exhibitions in London, six in the United States, and a number upon the Continent of Europe have been organised under its auspices in Munich Dusseldorf, and Budapest. This year the Society has accepted the invitations of several provincial galleries in England, and exhibitions have been already held in Manchester and Burnley, and for the months of October, November, and December the collection specially got together by the Society will remain in the Cartwright Hall. The aims of the Society have been to show the works of the most distinguished modern Artists of all nationalities, Sculptors, Painters, and Gravers, and to present the collection thus formed to the public in the most artistic manner. In the words of Mr. Whistler, the object of the Society is ‘“‘the holding of art congresses in art centres,” thus enabling a large number of people in widely separated countries to see gathered together, at one time and in one place, the work which influences the world of Art. The Society has for the last two years held its annual Exhibition in the New Gallery, Regent Street,
London, and the next will open early in January, 1906. To the memory of the first President, the late Mr. Whistler, a room has been devoted in the present Exhibition, in which hangs the largest collection of his lithographs yet seen together, save in the Memorial Exhibition held by the Society in London in the Spring of this year.
Mr. Whistler, the American, was succeeded as President by M. A. Rodin, the great French sculptor. An example of his work is included in the present Exhibition.
The Exhibition was arranged and hung by the following members, appointed by the Council of the International Society :—
For Sculpture: ‘I. Stirling Lee. For Painting: Bertram Priestman. For Graving: F. Morley Fletcher, Joseph Pennell.
